If you are a volunteer, you do not need to pay for your DBS application.
For non-volunteer applications, the applicant will receive a payment request email after the verification process has been completed. This email will contain a link to pay for the application. The fee is £40.
Once your certificate is issued and you have intended you wish to join the Update Service you will be sent an email with a link to register your certificate which you need to do within 30 days. The DBS charge £13 per year to maintain your certificate. If you choose not to register then your certificate will only be valid for one year from the date issued and if you were to continue in your role after this time, you would need to make a fresh application at a further cost of £40.
To pay, the applicant should click the link in the email, or log into their applicant account on the DBS portal and follow the instructions to pay.
The rules around whether or not someone is a volunteer are not the ECB's but HMRC’s. There is no separate DBS for paid roles – the same DBS covers paid and voluntary.

The fee for the DBS (if someone has to pay for it) is of course deductible against taxes if someone is earning money from the role that requires it (professional coaches for example).
Please note, it must be the applicant who pays for their own application, using their own card details. It cannot be paid for by anyone else on the applicant's behalf.
